About the Imagination Library
A Gift That Inspires Generations of Readers
The Imagination Library was created by Dolly Parton in 1995, inspired by her father’s inability to read and her desire to share the gift of literacy with families in her hometown. What began as a small local effort has grown into a global movement — with over 1 million books mailed to children each month across five countries.
In North Carolina, the program is supported through a public–private partnership with the NC Legislature, which invests $7 million annually to help families access free books and early literacy support.

21,000+ Johnston County Children Have Discovered the Joy of Reading
Since launching locally, the Imagination Library has reached more than 21,000 children in Johnston County. Our collaboration with local hospitals introduces the program to families at birth, ensuring every child has the chance to build early literacy skills from the very beginning.
